Ocean Tip - Be sure to put on a new site the night before heading out to the beach. A site that is a couple of days old, or even brand new, is more likely to fall off in the water. For extra protection, put the site on a part of your body that is covered by your swimsuit.
Sand Tip - If you take your pump off to hang out at the beach, you are likely to get sand in the site where the tubing clip attaches. To avoid changing a site beach side, simply pack a syringe in your kit. Fill the syringe with water and irrigate the holes where the sand has settled in. Flooding the holes with water will push the sand up and out of the site for a clean and sand-free reattachment.
Sun Tip - Keeping insulin cold during summer outings is crucial. To ensure a stress-free trip, carry along a cooler and insulin injections with you. If you feel the pump has gotten too warm, switch to injections until you can get back home and change out the insulin. If your child will not do this without an argument, try keeping the pump in the cooler for the duration of your trip. Then simply bring the pump out every hour to give your child his/her basal rate.
