TIPS AND IDEAS |
Traveling and Time Zone Changes
With summer quickly approaching I am sure that many of you are planning your summer vacations. This often presents the challenge of changing time zones and how difficult the transition from one time zone to another will be determined by how large the time difference is and, how many basal rate changes you have during the day.
Every summer my family travels to Arizona which is a 3 hour time difference. I make my flight in the morning. I want to have as much time during the day to make changes with out affecting the night time sugars. As soon as the plane takes off, I change the first hour. Slowly changing the time instead of changing it all at once will help maintain your blood sugars throughout the zone changes. I also have my daughters eat something every 2 hours to avoid a low. We all know that staying with an eating schedule is the best plan for maintaining your blood sugars. However, when changing time zones, eating a small snack every two hours works well for us.
I check their blood sugars every 2 hours during the first 24 hours of making any time zone changes. I try to keep in mind if they are eating later than normal or earlier than normal and adjust the basal rates accordingly. You should let your Certified Diabetic Educator or Endocrinologist know that you are planning a trip that will require time zone changes in advance. They can help you set up temporary basal settings for your particular trip and give you tips that will be specific to your needs. I also find that using the travel time and basal changes is a great opportunity to continue educating my two daughters about how to better manage their diabetes.

We have been very particular about the bra straps selection, wanting only the highest quality adjustable straps to ensure a perfect fit. The trick has been finding bra straps that are manufactured in the U.S. that also meet our rigorous requirements for product quality. Our search finally ended when we located wonderful, American-made bra straps that stand up to daily wear and washings. We plan to ship out the pre-orders next month.
