Type 1 Diabetes Research: Umbilical Cord Blood
A family member just sent me an article that he found online regarding the research the University of Florida has been conducting with children recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The article is located online at UF Research.
The study was partially funded by JDRF and it has some interesting results that made me think about my own children who have been diagnosed for some time now. The article states that all parents can choose to bank their newborn's umbilical cord these days. I was unaware that was an option provided by OB-GYNs today, but good to know. So I can see a discussion about this very subject in the years to come when my own daughters decide to start their families. I'm sure by that time this study's findings will have been duplicated, expanded on, and determined to be beneficial or not.
However, for any family that has a history of Type 1 and is starting a family in the near future, this research opens up the question "If it is economically feasible, should we choose to bank our newborn's umbilical cord?" On JDRF's website, they offer some guidelines for parents that are weighing this kind of decision. JDRF Statement on Cord Blood
