Closing in on The Cure
During the month of August I had the pleasure of participating in the JDRF Walk Summit in Orlando Florida. The highlight of the weekend was listening to Bill Ahearn, Vice President of Strategic Communications and Information Technology for JDRF. Bill’s connection to JDRF is personal, as his wife had had type 1 for more than 30 years. Bill spoke of many different types of advancements
in the treatment of diabetes and the work that JDRF is doing towards the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
The good was that the Artificial Pancreas (AP) is no longer a goal
but a reality. Human trials are being conducted and the results have been very promising. Bill felt that the Artificial Pancreas would be available with in 2 to 7 years to all Type 1 diabetics. The model that they are using to create the AP is a CGM (Continued Glucose Monitor) that is working directly with an insulin pump. They would
talk automatically and adjust as needed with out any involvement needed from the patient wearing the AP. In human trials they have been able to stabilize the blood sugars through the night with blood sugars ranging between 98-100 for the entire night.
This breakthrough in technology is so amazing that CBS news recently had Dr. Bill Tamborland and Katie Helm on to demonstrate the Artificial Pancreas. In case you missed it I have inserted the link below
